Customer Info - Natural Gas Rebate Program (NGRP)

Natural Gas Rebate Program (NGRP):

In response to high natural gas prices this fall, the Government of Alberta has expanded the Natural Gas Rebate Program to include the month of October.

The typical program cycle of the Natural Gas Rebate Program is November to March. Should natural gas prices continue to be above the trigger price of $5.50/GJ, the rebate program will be applied to natural gas bills this fall and winter. The Natural Gas Rebate Program is in its third year, ending March 31, 2009.

The winter rebate program runs from October  through March, when Albertans consume about 70 per cent of their heating for the year and gas prices are traditionally highest.

The rebate amount is stepped as follows :

If the gas on bills is:

The rebate will be:

Over $5.50, up to $7.50 per GJ

$1.50 per GJ

Over $7.50, up to $9.00 per GJ

$2.50 per GJ

Over $9.00, up to $12.00 per GJ

$3.25 per GJ

Over $12.00 per GJ

$3.25 per GJ, plus costs over $12.00 per GJ

EXAMPLE:

The below example is how Natural Gas Rebate rates were calculated for October, 2005:

These are the EUB rates approved for the three major Natural Gas Suppliers for October, 2005:

DERS North    $11.805/GJ
AltaGas           $12.256/GJ
DERS South   $12.262/GJ

The middle rate of $12.256 from AltaGas is the “trigger” price, and as such determines the October rebate.  $0.256 is the amount of the trigger price over $12.00/GJ.

The rebate for October, 2005 is therefore $3.25 +  $0.256 = $3.506/GJ rounded up to the nearest cent - $3.51

Irrigation, Grain Dryers & Greenhouses:

Customers in these categories MUST APPLY directly to the NGRP – click on the link below for application forms and more information.

Selected agricultural consumers (irrigation farmers, forage dehydrators, grain dryers and commercial greenhouses), whose peak consumption occurs in different months, may select the five months in which they would like the rebate to apply (6 months for 2005/06).
Eligibility differs for some consumers:

  • Industrial consumers are limited to 5,000 GJs per meter per month.
  • The oil and gas sector is ineligible, as is natural gas used for transportation (in vehicles), feedstock, consumption outside of Alberta and natural gas purchased for resale.
  • Propane, fuel oil, kerosene and (in limited circumstances) electricity are eligible for equivalent rebates when a natural gas rebate is triggered.  Biomass, wood and coal are ineligible
